The Shruti Box is a very easy instrument to handle and requires few playing skills, contemplating ample bellows and a clean sound. It produces a full sound, very similar to a harmonium or an accordion.

It’s mainly used to accompany chanting (harmonic singing, mantra singing, etc.).

They’re 2 sizes available. Price varies by size.

Shruti-Box Size

The shruti is very similar to a harmonium, but doesn’t have a keyboard. The top of the open bellows is hand pumped.

Inside, air is pressed through the vibrating metal parts. The opening allows air to flow from the inside out and causes the reed to produce a musical note.

The 13 chromatic notes of an octave can be selected by opening the valves and then making adjustment for singing.
